Kansas State baseball built an eight-run lead and held off a late charge by Nebraska to beat the Huskers Sunday, 9-6, in the final day of the Frisco Collegiate Baseball Classic in Frisco, Texas.
The Wildcats led 2-1 after two innings, then tacked on three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to build a 8-1 lead. The Huskers tried to climb back into it with a run in the seventh, and after surrendering a run in the top of the eighth, Nebraska scored two in the eighth and two in the ninth to cut the deficit to three, but KSU was able to finish off the victory and send the Huskers to a 1-2 record for the weekend.
Lincoln Sheffield (2-1) earned the win for K-State, pitching 6.1 innings while allowing six hits, two earned runs and collecting seven strikeouts. Jackson Brockett (0-1) took the loss, allowing two earned runs in two innings. Maximus Martin paced the KSU offense, hitting 3-for-4 with two RBI with a double and a home run. Seth Dardar was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two doubles as well for the Wildcats. Dylan Carey paced the Huskers’ offense by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, a double and a homer. Devin Nunez was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a homer for NU as well.
