Nebraska baseball put an exclamation point on its regular season with a 14-2, eight-inning victory over Purdue Saturday in the rubber game of the three-games series to end the regular season for both sides.
The Cornhuskers (28-27 15-15 B1G) scored early and often, tallying two runs in the first, four in the second, then two more in the third to build an 8-0 lead. After the Boilermakers (31-23, 11-19 B1G) scored once in the bottom of the third, the teams traded runs to push the score to 9-2. Nebraska scored once in the sixth and four in the eighth to invoke the mercy rule in the final game of the series.
Each Husker starter collected at least one hit, led by Will Jesske, who was 4-for-5 with a double. Six Nebraska pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts while allowing just six hits.
The series win by the Huskers slotted them into the No. 8 seed for next week’s Big Ten Tournament, beginning Tuesday at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
